Article Review

The article I reviewed is about the benefits of One-to-One computing. This is a topic I am interested in because our school is exploring this idea.

  1. I think that the One to One Computing can be an amazing teaching tool from learners in upper elementary all the way up to high school. For a teacher to have the ability to assign a project knowing that a student will have computer access makes it much easier to assign outside class work. With all the rigors in the day for teachers, it would be a great asset for students to be able to work on stuff outside the classroom.

The difficulties I see with this is simply the costs of the overall program. Supplying the every student in a school or district is an expense that I don’t see most schools being able to support with less and less money becoming available. Then you have the programs and the maintenance. Not to mention what happens if a student loses or damages a computer. Personally speaking I wouldn’t feel comfortable sending home a computer with some of my students. With some of them I feel like I would possibly never see it again. There would have to be some kind parent waver agreement, but I would still be worried in some circumstances.

Overall I think it’s a great idea. I just don’t know how realistic it is for some schools even though I know Westside (Omaha) school district does do this for their students. It would be a positive impact on our student’s education.
